<174> The names of certain places in Syria

Ibn ʿAsākir quoted a tradition which goes back to the Prophet to the effect that Ishmael, the son of Abraham (peace be upon both), fathered twelve sons, one of whom was called Duma, and that Dumat al-Jandal was named after him.

There is another tradition that Lot had four sons and two daughters: Moab, Ammon, Jallan and Malkan, and Zughar and al-Rubba. These gave their names to ʿAmmān, the city of the Belqa, Moab, again in the Belqa, and the Spring of Zughar and al-Rubba.354

Al-Sharqī ibn al-Quṭāmī said: Sidon was called after Saidūn ibn Sadūqā ibn Kanʿān ibn Ḥām ibn Nūḥ (Noah), and Jericho (Arīḥa) after Arīḥa ibn Mālik ibn Arfakhshud ibn Sām (Shem) ibn Nūḥ, and Belqa after Ablaq ibn ʿAmmān ibn Lūṭ (Lot), who ruled and lived there.

It is said that Kiswa derives its name from the fact that it was there that Ghassan slew <175> envoys of the Byzantine Emperor who came to them demanding tribute. They killed them and took their clothes (kiswa).

Here ends the material I have taken from al-Tīfāshī.
